I have featured many kinds of song under the 'love and heartbreak' rubric: songs of true love, songs of joy, songs of pain; songs of eternal commitment, songs invoking the mountains, the stars, even the Almighty; songs of loss. But the series would not be complete if it didn't also include the connection between love and folly. I therefore bring you this one by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson - 'Love Makes A Fool Of Us All'. As if they were themselves a pair of old rogues - but remember, they're only singing - they tell us, among other things, that love 'makes liars and cheaters and beggars who crawl'. Not, perhaps, a wholly original thought, but one that deserves mention in this series.
'Dreams of forever... just words in a letter'? The shock of it.
