It's not a building in which I spent much time, but it's where my barmitzvah took place on 11 August, 1956, and others who hail from those parts may find it of interest. It's the old Bulawayo synagogue - destroyed by fire in 2003 - on Abercorn Street (as was).
Right at the beginning of the video, there's a shot of another building. I think that's where I did a crash course in Hebrew in the first part of 1956 - to prepare myself for the big day. I remember walking back down Abercorn Street towards home after the first lesson, in which my classmates were all several years younger than me. Feeling low about having to learn a new language, I said to my companion, 'I have nothing to look forward to.' How wrong I was and how melodramatic. I've since learned to be a bit more balanced about things. (Thanks: MKr.)
