This is a rich piece of cynicism if ever there was. To avoid having to acknowledge responsibility for torture and other abuses by the British colonial administration in Kenya during the 1950s, the British government is appealing to the principle 'that countries assume liability for their own affairs after independence'. Therefore, even though Britain was actually the responsible party at that time in a substantive sense, legal responsibility for the torture of Kenyans lies with... the Kenyan government now. It's worthy of Joseph Heller.
