I once had this idea, but concluded that it would never catch on. The idea was for a day every year - a kind of anti-birthday-and-anti-Christmas rolled into one - when family and friends, instead of giving you stuff, would come to the house and throw some of your things away. Selectively, of course. The impulse behind the idea was that this might help to stem the rising tide of belongings wherever they were becoming a problem. But naah, it's not the best idea I've ever had.
I was reminded of it by reading about Good Riddance Day in New York. This one improves on mine in respecting individual autonomy more.
