You may or may not feel you need yet another commendation of Jane Austen and Pride and Prejudice, but here one is anyway. As the man says:
[I]f you want Jane Austen, you've got to read Jane Austen. What a joy it is to do so.
I let that sentiment serve as introduction to the following question. How long do you reckon a list of Greatest Writers of All Time would have to be in order for it to be certain of carrying Jane Austen's name? A top ten? A top 20 or 50? The 100 greatest? Surely. Nope. Here is just such a list, one big hundred stretchy long, and Jane Austen is omitted from it. I know that such lists always generate these 'but, but, but...' objections. It is in their nature to do so. But leaving Austen off a list of 100 great writers makes the word 'ludicrous' look timid and retiring. Nice pictures, though. (Thanks: SC.)
