In case you weren't yet aware of it, President Obama's senior counterterrorism adviser wants you to know that the war on terror is being replaced by something else. He says, does John O. Brennan:
We are not saying that poverty causes terrorism, or disenfranchisement causes terrorism, but we can't mistake there are certain phenomena that contribute to it... Terrorism needs to be fought against and certainly delegitimized or attacked, but some of the underlying grievances that might in fact lead individuals astray to terrorism cannot be ignored.
So terrorism is still being fought against and even attacked but, as the Washington Post's headline helpfully summarizes things, the battle against terrorism is 'to go beyond bombs and bullets'. Unlike other wars, which are (don't you know?) fought exclusively with bombs and bullets. Obama's war on terror is too genteel to call itself one, despite repeated reference to terrorism being the thing it is aimed at. One day there'll be as many FKATWOTs as there are States of the Union, but for now it's a mere 28. (Via.)
