Freedom House is an NGO 'promot[ing] the growth of freedom' around the world. One of its central concerns is freedom of the press. Until this year its Freedom of the Press Index classified Israel as a free country, but in May 2009 it downgraded it to 'partially free'. Adi Schwartz, a freelance journalist and former senior editor at Haaretz, decided to look into why. He wasn't entirely convinced by what he found. (Thanks: L.)
