There's an appeal for people interested to think about what we should say in trying to get in touch with intelligent aliens that there might be somewhere out there - what we should say first, that is. It's an interesting question. One doesn't want to start off on the wrong foot. Two suggestions so far have been these:
This is Earth speaking. We would like to know you. Please reply.
Down here we are all confused.
I would advise against the second of those as an opening remark. At least some of us may not be confused. In any case, why put ourselves on so humble a footing without knowing who we're talking to? They may be even more confused than we are, or just looking for an advantage and see us as confessing to a vulnerability. 'Is there anybody out there?' seems neutral enough; to which we could then add, 'This is humankind, calling from Earth. There is much that is good about us. Please get in touch.' Another possibility, just to be cautious: 'Are you vegetarians?' Further suggestions are invited.
