John Goekler's a clever guy. He's giving us a whole bunch of reasons to fear something more than we fear terrorism: smoking; a bad diet; medical professionals; co-workers with infections; asbestos in our ceilings; lead in our pipes; car drivers; etc. All more dangerous to life and limb, you see, than terrorism. From which his inferences are that security is an illusion and it's a 'complete waste' investing in it. The only things that make us more secure are...
... the courage to face whatever comes with dignity and intention, and the strong relationships that assure we will face the future together, and find comfort and meaning in doing so.
I wonder if anyone has ever pointed out to Goekler the distinction between dying in an accident, or through illnesses brought on by a lifestyle that you've chosen, or through some other process not deliberately intended to harm, and being done to death for no other reason than that someone wants to kill you - or maybe not even you but just anyone, and you will do. Does he think that the money invested in preventing and/or punishing common-or-garden murder is a complete waste? Goekler isn't all that clever.
