That struggle formerly known as the war on terror looks set to retain its 'formerly known as' status. Who could possibly regret its passing if it's to be known from now on by the colourful 'overseas contingency operations'? And named for Richard Rorty too.
Meanwhile, Simon Jenkins wants us to know of another war that - just like the war on terror - should never have been one:
This war [in Afghanistan] remains what it was from the start, aggression against a foreign state intended to punish it for refusing to hand over the perpetrators of 9/11.
There you go. The Taliban allows an attack on the US to be prepared from its territory, playing indulgent host to al-Qaida; the US retaliates, and with UN authorization. And that's aggressive war, by the US. Sometimes I miss getting the Guardian delivered at home. It can make you laugh. But mostly, what an improvement of life.
