The question I posed yesterday about power-sharing in Zimbabwe - pathway or trap? - looks like it might be getting a swift answer. Morgan Tsvangirai had insisted on the release of political detainees who have been abducted and tortured, and had secured agreement to this from Robert Mugabe as a condition of becoming prime minister in a unity government. A new dilemma is now posed for the MDC leader: if Mugabe and his pals renege on the deal, as seems more than possible, would it be better for the health and safety of the detainees to go into the unity government nonetheless, and '[fight] for their freedom from inside', or better to stay out? So it goes on. There's always one more twist of compromise or concession to be navigated.
