I mean 9 November 1938, Kristallnacht. Tonight is the 70th anniversary. The German Chancellor Angela Merkel has spoken today in Berlin's largest synagogue. There is a commemorative concert this evening at Tempelhof airport. Synagogues throughout the world will be illuminated.
The Telegraph reproduces a column from its pages on 9 November 1938: 'Local Nazi leaders and Government officials will meet in Berlin to-morrow to discuss plans for a new anti-Jewish drive.' And see also this report about an old dump near Berlin which may contain remnants of items looted during Kristallnacht.
To remember, at the same time, the few brave Germans who helped save Jews during the Nazi period and are now honoured by a museum just opened in Berlin.
'Compared to the number of people who allowed Nazi atrocities to happen or even took part in them, the people who shielded Jews were a tiny minority,' said Berlin's mayor Klaus Wowereit. 'But it is this minority that gives us direction.'
