Germaine Greer thinks freedom is better expressed by music than it is by monuments. In her own words:
Freedom cannot be built, but it can be sung.
She may well be right. But she should have left out the political philosophy towards the end. Greer slides with ease from monuments, to dictators abusing the name of freedom, to states being 'authoritarian structures' - not dictatorial states, but states, period. 'Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose' all right, but it's better if you've got some protection while you're singing this, protection not as in warlord but as in rule of law, which so far hasn't found a way separate from... you know, human government, preferably democratic and constrained.
