The game is explained here. Having won the toss, I get to choose the first country and the first player for my team from that country. I indicate order of selection with letters from the alphabet, so that when the teams are reorganized into batting order you can still follow the sequence in which the players were chosen.
Norm's Team
Gary Sobers (a)
Clyde Walcott (b)
Everton Weekes (c)
Malcolm Marshall (d)
Joel Garner (e)
Curtly Ambrose (f)
George Headley (g)
Clive Lloyd (h)
Conrad Hunte (i)
Desmond Haynes (j)
Sonny Ramadhin (k)
Alex's Team
Lance Gibbs (a)
Viv Richards (b)
Brian Lara (c)
Gordon Greenidge (d)
Rohan Kanhai (e)
Michael Holding (f)
Courtney Walsh (g)
Frank Worrell (h)
Roy Fredericks (i)
Andy Roberts (j)
Jeffrey Dujon (k)
The progress of the game can also be followed on Alex's blog. (Annoyingly, he is picking some of the players I wanted for my team, just ahead of my doing so. Losing Gordon Greenidge was a real blow. Gibbs would have been my next choice after Sobers. Canny opponent!)
Aftermath: On second thoughts, I'm not going to upset the order of selection set out above. I'll just re-list the teams in batting order:
Norm's: 1. Hunte 2. Haynes. 3. Headley 4. Sobers. 5. Weekes. 6. Lloyd (capt) 7. Walcott (wkt) 8. Marshall 9. Garner 10. Ambrose 11. Ramadhin
Alex's: 1. Greenidge 2. Fredericks 3. Lara 4. Richards 5. Kanhai 6. Worrell (capt) 7. Dujon (wkt) 8. Roberts 9. Holding 10. Gibbs 11. Walsh
As one of the two selectors, it is not for me, of course, to forecast a result for the upcoming series between these teams. Let me just say that I'm confident my team will give a good account of itself. It has a better composite batting average and a better composite bowling average for its five frontline bowlers than does Alex's side. My five bowlers also have a better composite wickets-per-Test ratio than do Alex's five. If I were to tell you that I have precise figures for these comparisons, you might think it sad. So I'm not going to tell you that.
