Good on John Amaechi. He's urging athletes at the Beijing Olympics to use their presence there to talk about China's human rights record. Good on him for doing that; but good on him, especially, for drawing attention to the fact that it follows from the Olympic charter itself. Amaechi says that 'being an ambassador for human rights in China is the most Olympian thing to do': that the charter expects as much from athletes.
He's right. Check it out for yourself. The first fundamental principle of Olympism [pdf - page 12] says:
Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles. The second principle has 'promoting a peaceful society concerned with the preservation of human dignity'. Nice one, John!
