It's a lament by Murray Whyte for the fact that our planet doesn't tolerate enough darkness:
We are a society of light-addled control freaks. And what a shame that is. The dark is, by nature, intimate and mysterious, shadows providing moody cover for secrets and rites.Mmm, yes - but it's hard to read in the dark and, well, to see. And that 'it's our natural state, after all, once the sun goes down' is not a powerful consideration. Our natural state is also to die from curable illnesses. I know, I know: being able to see the night sky; energy-saving. Still, it isn't just about control freakery.
