School-leavers should be encouraged to swear an oath of allegiance to Queen and country, says a report commissioned by Gordon Brown on British citizenship. The author of the report is Lord Goldsmith. But the bit about the Queen is less definite according to this:
"In terms of a British national day, what may be beneficial is a new public holiday to celebrat[e] the bond of shared citizenship," he [Goldsmith] said.It makes a difference - an oath of allegiance to the Queen and not necessarily an oath of allegiance to the Queen. The former version isn't a good idea. If the thing is about shared citizenship then one must look to values that are indeed shared. And he said that the ceremonies need not necessarily involve an oath of allegiance to the Queen.
