Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is singing the same song as Henry Porter. If this country is failing its children, those at fault are... 'us'. Like Porter, Alibhai-Brown is clear that what she means by this is not - or not only - that we are all responsible for failures of political and social policy:
[Y]ou can't just blame the politicians. All of us are in this together and all of us culpable to some degree. I feed my kids good food and try to keep them from the worst national habits but... [etc.]Can it be that she doesn't know any good or conscientious parents? If there were truly no examples of such, who could we emulate? Is blame something you can distribute irrespective of what different people actually do? (Thanks: PB.)
