We went to see Jindabyne last night, the new movie by Ray Lawrence. We went (both me and WotN) with good expectations, because we had very much liked Lantana by the same director. There was also this from Peter Bradshaw, a five-star review. I won't give away anything of the plot, but speaking for myself I found the film disappointing, despite its strengths. The central relationship, between the Gabriel Byrne and Laura Linney characters, is superbly delineated and played out, but the the movie's main premise I didn't find credible; and there were other things about it - the very obvious allegorical message, an intensely annoying child character, voices wailing endlessly on the soundtrack, and a bit too much filmic flab in which nothing very much went on other than what had already been going on long enough to be assimilated - that made me yearn for home.
