I was on my way to Australia when Robert Altman died, and so failed to note his passing. I make what amends I can for this by pointing you towards his last movie, A Prairie Home Companion, which Adèle and I went to see last night. I've liked some of Altman's movies better than others, and some (Short Cuts, The Player) not at all. But what a way to bow out. A Prairie Home Companion is beautifully acted (by a cast of familiar faces obviously enjoying themselves), touching and very funny; and, above all, it is absolutely splendid musically. We'll probably go back again tonight, wind conditions in Manchester permitting. There's a review by Philip French here.
