Leaders within the Muslim Council of Britain have tried to get the boycott of Holocaust Memorial Day reversed, but were outvoted in the ruling committee by 23 to 14. Those in favour of getting rid of the boycott see it as 'a self-inflicted wound', damaging the MCB's reputation. The report here doesn't say whether there's more to it than a concern for the MCB's reputation, but according to this, for Zafar Ali, director of the Slough Islamic School project, there is:
[He] said he had always been opposed to the boycott. "It is essential that the world never forgets the sufferings of any people at any time in history. Holocaust Day reminds us all of the brutality and evil that men can do."Some Muslims are commemorating the day:
City Circle, a network of young Muslim professionals, will join with the Holocaust Educational Trust to remember the victims of the Holocaust and other more recent genocides. For my views on the boycott of Holocaust Memorial Day, see these posts from two years ago.
