I'm sure I once posted a link to someone writing that there are two types of people: those who like Abba and are open about it, and those who like Abba but don't own up. In my present (travelling) situation, I can't track down the post, but no matter; I belong to the former group. And not caring - as you'll already know - about reputation, I'm ready to let on that on Saturday I made my way to the Palace Theatre, in the company of of my dear, beloved wife, there to attend a matinee performance of Mamma Mia!. Even liking Abba's music, I wasn't too sure what to expect of a musical constructed around an already existing collection of songs.
Well, when they tell you 'Global Smash Hit', it's with good reason. It's absolutely terrific. The plot is ingenious and the use of those songs, worked into the story line, likewise; the dancing is wonderful, the humour pervasive. The cast encourage the audience's complicity in a great tongue-in-cheek extravaganza. By the end a whole theatre full of people is on its feet, delighted. Go and see for yourself.
Outa here.
