If you go to the Socialist Worker letters here, you will find one from Danielle Field of Preston, talking about some of the difficulties of being a religious believer, derided for her faith by others in that organization who don't share it. The thing that leapt out at me, however, was this passage:
I do not feel a need to challenge the position of the SWP, as we have the best analysis of the world situation and as such are more likely than most religious groups to make the practical decisions necessary to rid the world of the horrors of capitalism. So Danielle Field has, loosely speaking, two religions. I know nothing about her, but I'm guessing she didn't come by this way of putting things all by herself. It's the kind of (absurd) notion cultivated by certain types of small organization. To any moderately intelligent person knowing anything about the complexities of the world, the idea that there could just be a 'best analysis of the world situation' and that a tiny organization like the SWP would just happen to have possession of it - to say nothing of being able to 'make the practical decisions necessary to rid the world of the horrors of capitalism' - is grotesque. The more experienced comrades should be trying to bust, rather than inculcate, it.
