Can anyone tell me why newsreaders are taught - or so I assume - to use the highly artificial, singsong delivery that they do use, to deliver their information? At lunch-time today I heard one of them reporting a statement that so long as something or other was going on, 'its operations will continue'. She said that like this:
... eeets operations wiilll continue. From the context it was clear that this wasn't because she wanted to give particular emphasis to either 'its' or 'will' for reasons of meaning, but just because that's what the previous singsong patterns seemed to her to require. So why? For fear of sounding monotonous? But like that it is monotonous. Worse still, it sounds silly. And it annoys me.
