I'm not entirely sure why I'm pleased about this. But I am. This is one, but only one, reason. I'm also sort of pleased about this.
Update at 3.00 PM: From a reader:
Every Saturday morning I sit in our local swimming baths watching kids of many races, faiths and sizes - my own three included - learning to swim. As I stood in Stratford's Meridian Square at lunchtime, carrying my four-year-old who was scared of the noisy crowd, it was just so obvious that this victory was for all these kids. I bristle a bit when people talk about the need for massive regeneration in this area - something about local pride I suppose - but by any objective measure we do need so much here. Having been at the announcement of both Manchester's failed bids I'd gone along to this announcement with some trepidation. I have to say it is the best feeling to be on the winning side.
