A piece in the FT which reports that Labour could suffer in constituencies 'with significant Muslim populations' and 'in the heartlands of the liberal intelligentsia' also says that 'the war... does not seem to be an issue for most British voters':
In a poll by Mori... last week respondents ranked Iraq as 14th out of 16 key election issues. The report goes on to say that for Tony Blair personally, however, victory in the election could be a hollow one, given how his own reputation has suffered because of the Iraq war. One commentator is quoted as saying Blair wouldn't be able to claim it as a personal mandate. Well, we shall see. A victory is a victory; and if it's clear, and despite everything - why, even despite that liberal intelligentsia who would have preferred to see Saddam Hussein remain in place - then this is precisely what it will be. Election results have a way of affecting what it makes sense to go on saying, and what it doesn't.
