Went out last night to see Michael Mann's new movie Collateral. There's a review in today's Observer by Philip French who says it's 'as good a thriller as we're likely to see this year'. There was also a piece about it by Joe Queenan in yesmo's Graun. Queenan writes that 'Collateral is a very good but not great motion picture.'
I'll go with both judgements. Mann - one of my favourite contemporary directors - has again delivered something taut and fast-moving, and with an excellent script, but the last third of the film becomes predictable where what preceded it was fresh and different. It's well worth a visit in any case. Like Heat, it's visually brilliant - the 'flow' of LA at night quite stunning.
