Well, wouldn't you know it? Scarcely are the words of complaint out of my mouth about how I've been having to get Sight and Sound these past 13 years or so even though I don't read that much of it, when the September issue arrives and it has a great feature on music in film. As part of this feature a bunch of directors are asked to choose their favourite movie soundtracks, and a bunch of musicians likewise. Now that's what I call an interesting exercise. I was glad, though not surprised, to see Bernard Hermann's soundtracks for both Psycho and Vertigo cropping up a few times, and Miles Davis's music on Louis Malle's Lift to the Scaffold (Ascenseur pour l'échafaud).
