The blogger at Jam Today (whose name I've been unable to find - sorry, person) has put up his or her list of 10 books, and Ophelia, who'd put up hers already, has followed up with an explanatory comment of an entirely persuasive kind. Careful comparative research on Ophelia's list, Jam Today's and my own yields the following hypothesis: all such lists of 10 books will share one item, but only one, in common. Me and Ophelia: Mill, On Liberty. Ophelia and Jam Today: Richard Hofstadter, Anti-Intellectualism in American Life. Jam Today and me: Primo Levi, If This Is A Man.
The hypothesis, you may note, is falsifiable. But we must await further instances of the species to see whether or not it will ever be falsified.
