Readers, I have to share this with you. My latest poll has got off to a worryingly sluggish start. I could be optimistic about it and imagine that everyone is busy puzzling over their entries, and that these will begin to flow - no, to flood - in later. But I'm not a great optimist by nature, and so I feel I must offer inducements to you to begin to pitch in those entries. I can give you arguments, too, in case you're more susceptible to the wiles of reason. Here's one: the pattern of the early entries shows that votes are going to be spread across a very large number of rockers, rollers and others of this rough persuasion, so that there'll need to be a good entry for us to get meaningful results. There you go. Doesn't that make you just itch to email me with your choices?
However, I promised inducements, and here's the first of them. I'm disclosing eight of my own ten votes (I have still to settle the final two). I'm doing this at the risk of opening myself up to pointed remarks about my age, to derision and even contumely. Here, anyway, are those eight votes. There's no order to them except that the first five are the top five (internally unranked); they'd be that on any foreseeable day of any week, month or year.
The BeatlesThe last two to follow in due course. Here's a further inducement. Should this appeal lead to an early and sufficiently large influx of entries, I shall post - by arrangement, exclusively at normblog - Oliver Kamm's Top Three Beach Boys tracks.
The Rolling Stones
The Beach Boys
Bob Dylan

The Band
Van Morrison
OK, then, readers, rockers, bloggers, citizens. Have I ever asked anything of you before? Please send me your favourite rock/pop etc. people, up to ten of them.
