There was no sign on the streets of Baghdad yesterday of much sympathy for the former president. Tikrit was quiet, with schools and universities closed. Two years ago hundreds of thousands of Ba'ath party faithful poured on to its streets to admire a solid silver statue of Saddam astride a golden horse, itself astride a gilded tank, riding towards the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.Or here:
Iraqis working with the US occupation authorities say Saddam has appeared increasingly detached from reality.Some version of this 'detachment' seems to come over former dictators, and criminals against humanity of one kind and another, with remarkable frequency.
