What are Bob Dylan's finest albums? If the question interests you at all, you're likely to have your own view, but it occurred to me to have a look and see what guidance might be had from the results of the normblog best songs poll. This is only a loose indication, of course, because no one was voting for albums as such in that poll, and also because I don't have the time or patience to collate all the votes that came in for all the songs. But putting together the votes for the songs that made the top 53 shows four albums way out in front of the rest. In chronological order they are:
Bringing It All Back Home (1965)
Highway 61 Revisited (1965)
Blonde On Blonde (1966)
Blood On The Tracks (1975)
Each of these albums obtained between 60 and 69 votes for the six or seven songs it secured in those top 53 slots; with the nearest contenders after them being The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (1963) and Desire (1976) - four songs apiece and respectively just over and somewhat under half the number of votes in that range. No other album was anywhere near even this close.
You want to know what I think Dylan's greatest album is? Yeah, you do. This one. If you don't got it, then your collection of music is lacking a masterpiece.
