There's this guy round at Huffington Post who, prompted by the celebration of Columbus Day in the US, has compiled a list of 'The 15 Most Overrated White People'. Well, of course, no two judges are going to come up with identical lists, but this list sure does have one or two weird entries. First up, Elvis Presley - because he 'didn't write his own songs', among other reasons. Laugh? Boy, did I.
And then there's the even bigger matter of William Shakespeare, who - would you believe? - does have 'a rightful place in the Western literary canon', but is 'the only person who seems to matter to the average person'. Forgive the repetition there, but I humbly submit that some kind of prejudice is at work.
