Other than the paragraph about the 'illegal U.S. invasion of Iraq', I commend the whole of this column to you. Taking off from Terry Glavin's book Come from the Shadows, Eva Sajoo writes about some of what's at stake in Afghanistan:
Visiting remote villages, newly built schools, and the streets of Kandahar, he [Terry Glavin] focuses on the voices of Afghans and their hopes and fears for the future of their nation.
We meet Ehsanullah Ehsan, a young man who defies Taliban death threats to build schools for girls. He also runs a learning centre that provides education and job skills to women in Kandahar City. It is called the Afghan-Canadian Community Centre, and it is funded by CIDA - for now.
What gives him the courage to continue? "I value freedom. I value civilization" he says, convinced that education can transform his country if given half a chance.
The rest is here.
