Tree as symbol, tree as tree

On most issues that come your way as issues, you sort of know what you think, right? Or else, if you don't, you have an idea of what principles to start from in thinking the issue through, or of some similar issue which might give you a clue. How about this one, though? The tree was planted in the Polish village of Jaslo 67 years ago to honour Hitler's birthday. The mayor of Jaslo wants the tree cut down. That was my first impulse: why, I thought, have they waited so long? But a local historian asks, what has the tree done wrong? Opinion in the village is divided.
