What is humanism?
Nigel Warburton puts the question to Andrew Copson, the person responsible for education and public affairs at the British Humanist Association. His answer makes it part of the meaning of humanism that it is a non-religious doctrine, and I think this makes good sense. It's not that humanists and believers can't share fundamental moral beliefs. They can - such as the commitment to universalist human values. But it robs the label 'humanist' of what has given it its core significance if one speaks of 'religious humanists'.
(There is, just by the way, an enjoyable typo on the BHA website, where Andrew is described as having 'wide experience embarcing sex and sexuality education'. Should that be 'embarking sex'? Or 'embracing sex'? Whatever - the best of humanist luck to him.)
