This is what I want for our country, more than anything. I want a leader who can love us.
So says Alice Walker. And who is the first exemplar for such loving leadership? It's Fidel:
A leader who would not leave them [Cubans] to wonder and worry alone, but would stand with them, walk with them, celebrate with them...
His only small oversight was that he failed to entrust them with the capacity to make their own decisions via effective democratic processes, or with the freedom to dissent without fear of imprisonment. That fact and some other features of Walker's piece may put you in mind of the idea of infantile regression.
