My friend Ian Holliday in Hong Kong has asked me to post an item on an English language camp he's organizing for Burmese refugees and migrants in northern Thailand. The camp will provide six weeks of intensive language training in three locations close to the Burmese border: regional capital Chiang Mai, border town Mae Sot, and Mae La refugee camp. It will enable roughly 30 undergraduate students to deliver classes to some 250 refugees and migrants - possibly more. It will open up a rare opportunity for Burmese people to converse in English and make real progress with the language. The reason why Ian asked me to bring this to the attention of normblog readers is that he is seeking donations to fund partial scholarships for participating students. Now is a good time to donate because any sum received by Ian in Hong Kong by the deadline of 15 February 2008 will gain a 50 per cent match from the Hong Kong Government - turning $1 into $1.50. Interested readers should contact Ian directly at the following email address.
