Successor to Mrs Watkins

Back in the day (as it is sometimes said), when I was a boy growing up in Bulawayo, there was a delicatessen-type place from which you could buy pickled cucumber like I don't think I've tasted better any time since. Mrs Watkins' pickled cucumber. And though I can't be absolutely sure of where the shop of the Mrs Watkins was, my memory now places it between Abercorn Street and Fife on Eighth or Ninth Avenue. If I read this map right, you'll be able to identify the area: Abercorn (now Jason Moyo) and Fife are the two roads running North-South between Main Street and George Silundika.

The point, however, is Mrs Watkins' pickled cucumber. Maybe it has the advantage of belonging to the past and so not being testable against real competition. Whether that's so or not, today I'm here to tell you that the best I've come across since back then is produced by Beit Hashita. The latter, according to what we're told here, is 'the leading pickle factory in Israel'. Its pickled cucumber respects the fundamental rule of pickled cucumberhood in being salty and not sweet. You can call this advertising if you want, but it ain't; it's merely food commentary. Do yourself a favour and try them. Oh, and it'll be one in the eye against the boycotters as well.
