On which issue, further, what are the lessons? One view is that the problem is us: by which the author means Americans, Americans who think that people are all the same, exactly like them, and in particular attached to individual rights, when in fact they aren't.
Another view - David Aaronovitch's - is that, whatever else, the lesson should not be 'that we think that democracy, basic human rights or liberty are relative values'.
