Knowing I'd be busy with cricket, travelling, seeing a country that was new to me, I took no music with me to Australia. I returned home, consequently, jazz-starved. One of the first things I put on was this: Bobby Hutcherson's In the Vanguard (1986 - 55 minutes). It was recorded at The Village Vanguard and to put it simply, if you haven't got it, you want it. Hutcherson himself, on vibes and marimba, is in top form, and as the review here says, 'The rhythm section is a thrill from start to finish...' Listen to the counterpoint between Hutcherson, Kenny Barron and Buster Williams on the second track 'Estaté'. The best in music.
