No offence
The police may want this, but they shouldn't get it:
Police are to demand new powers to arrest protesters for causing offence through the words they chant and the slogans on their placards and even headbands. What the report goes on to quote Shami Chakrabarti as saying is right:
[The proposal] misunderstands the nature of law and free expression in a democracy and casts the police as censors in chief. It aims to protect people from 'offence' rather than harm...Harm or actual incitement to violence - but not just 'offence'. That is much too broad. And 100 complaints to Scotland Yard in the matter of the Danish cartoons protest doesn't look like an 'earthquake' of offended people anyway.
