Short short stories
If you're not engrossed by the World Cup, or even if you are, you may like a bit of a summer distraction. I'm inviting you to send me a short story. I mean a very short story: no more than 250 words, excluding your title - for which, however, you may not use more than 10 words. I will post a selection of the stories sent (and sending one will be taken as giving your permission to post it); and if there's enough of an entry, I'll put them before a panel of judges, not including myself and to be announced in due course, for selection of the best three. There will be prizes.
To get this fabulous summer event going, I've asked my daughter Sophie Hannah to write a story - but which will not be eligible for the competition. Here it is:
The Moment of Official Revelation (by Sophie Hannah)'It's nothing.' Angela smoothes her wedding dress in front of the mirror. 'You like Sean, don't you?'
'Tell me,' Sarah insists.
Angela sighs. 'It's ridiculous! All right. We went to see "Reprisals" last week.'
'Poor you!'
'Did you guess the twist?'
'No. They cunningly made it too absurd for anyone to guess.'
'Sean claimed he did. I asked him when, and he said, "As soon as she saw him with the guide dog."'
'But...'
'Go on. Say it.' Angela frowns.
'Well, if he didn't guess before then... That's when we were shown. That was the moment of official revelation.'
'Exactly!' Angela sounds relieved. 'I told him that, but he just nodded and said, "Yeah, that was when I guessed."'
Slowly, Sarah shakes her head.
'I said, "Sean, you didn't guess. You found out when everyone else did, when the film-makers wanted you to." But... isn't it crazy for me to have doubts because of that?'
'No.' It might be tactful to lie in this situation, but Sarah finds she can't. You can't wonder about something once it's unambiguous; Sarah thinks this applies equally to the film's twist and to the advisability of Angela's wedding. But, like Angela, she can't be sure. She wonders: if real life were a film, would this be the moment when viewers start to wonder whether marrying Sean might be a disaster, or the moment of official revelation?
'Well?' Angela looks anxiously at her watch. She is getting married in 15 minutes.
Your turn. Send in a short short story.
