Last night I watched Cinderella Man on DVD. It's a gripping tale, the story of boxer James J. Braddock, marvellously played by Russell Crowe. There are some punishing fight scenes, and I recommend it to you with that proviso. If you can't go 15 rounds, don't watch it. Anyway, it got me to thinking of movies about boxing I've seen over the years, and since it's some time since I saw most of them, I reckon I'd like to take another look some time soon for purposes of comparison. Here's the list of boxing-related movies I can remember seeing:
Champion (1949); Somebody Up There Likes Me (1956); The Great White Hope (1970); Fat City (1972); Rocky (1976); Raging Bull (1980); Diggstown (1992); Million Dollar Baby (2004); Cinderella Man (2005).Here are some others I still need to catch up with:
Golden Boy (1939); Body and Soul (1947); The Set-Up (1949); The Harder They Fall (1956); Requiem for a Heavyweight (1962); When We Were Kings (1996); The Boxer (1997); Girlfight (2000); Ali (2001).And no, I haven't overlooked this one; despite immortal boxing-related content, there's not enough of that to make it a contender for the category.
