The Momma 'n' Daddy Collection 20

It's been a while now since I've had a post in this series that was on the main track; the main track being, of course, the memory of Momma 'n' Daddy by their grown-up children after those children have travelled a way down life's weary path, and are in a better position to know what's what than they used to be back then. So today I return to this central theme, bringing in a talent I haven't yet featured in the series: the fabulous Gillian Welch. (For those new to her, that's 'Gillian' with a hard G, as in 'guitar' or 'Garfield Sobers' or 'get lost'. If you missed it first time round, there's a brief review by me on the old normblog site - August 31 2003 - of a gig she and David Rawlings did in Manchester last year.)

Anyway, that was then and this is now; and Gillian is singing 'I Had A Real Good Mother And Father'. I'm sending this one out especially to Dave B and Arnold H:

I had a real good mother and father
And they surely stood the test
And now are in bright glory
And are sleeping on the savior's breast

They set a good example for me
And they taught me how to pray
Now I truly converted
And walkin' on the narrow way

I know that if I can not meet them on high
Then how lonely I will be
For what good is my journey
If I miss out on eternity

(Repeat of first verse)

They set a good example, everyone. That's what they did. Hear Gillian Welch singing it.
